Katakolon, Greece

Katakolon is a small holiday port town in Ilia, western Greece, known as the ‘gateway to Olympia’. Katakolon lies just east, 35km or 45 min by bus, of the ancient city of Olympia, the birthplace of the famous Games. This is a destination that will let you go away with a greater understanding of the ancient Hellenic civilization. According to legend, Zeus, the king of the Greek gods build Olympia. We admired the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the gymnasium, the hippodrome and the stadium which was designed to hold 40 000 spectators.
Besides the Olympia, Katakolon is a poor, unkept Greek town.
In the neighborhoods, waste on the streets were lying everywhere, shop buildings were abandon or empty and the people were few and without purpose.
The tourist area is the only place where something is happening and its one of the few incomes still existing in this area.
